The average length of time before someone with HIV gets AIDS is about 8-10 years. However, some HIV carriers have been known to live without AIDS for as many as 15 years. However, less fortunate victims of HIV have become extremely ill, very soon after the infection. It all depends on how strong the individual's immune system was to begin with.

The HIV that causes AIDS in U.S. is HIV-1. There is also HIV-2, which also causes an AIDS like illness but is not severe and people can live normally if infected with it. There is hope that HIV-2 may be used to activate one's immune system and create antibodies to HIV. If this is successful, when an individual is exposed to HIV-1, the immune system will be stronger to fight off the infection.

Some men of all races, not just Black and Latino men, secretly have sex with other men. The problem of publicly acknowledging bisexual and homosexual behavior is particularly troublesome for those battling the AIDS epidemic within the Black and Latino communities. E.g. having to show a masculine image to public eye for social survival skills. White men suffer less stereotyping due to better acceptance of different sexual preferences within their communities.

Trend: It is striking more women than ever before. Homosexual men and IV drug users have become complacent and unprotected sex with members of this sector is dangerous.

Perhaps the most important finding is the speed with which HIV  is spreading among black women in the Washington DC area.

Unprotected sex with anyone is a risk, but with high risk partners you are playing Russian roulette.

Highest Risk Sexual Activity for Men and Women: Unprotected Anal Sex. Commonly referred to in the lifestyle as, "Having a Death Wish."

If you have unprotected sex with anyone, you should first go to a drugstore or purchase a mail-in AIDS testing kit online; Home Access™ (Brand Name) and get tested.  Only the Home Access™ test is approved for public use by the FDA.

There are other companies that have at home tests and say they have instant results. For your information these tests appear to be accurate, but lots of start up websites are marketing these instant tests. Purchasing a test kit from one these websites doesn't insure much peace of mind when it comes to HIV and AIDS.

Another option is to call your local County Health Department and ask where to get a free HIV screening test. However, there is not the same level of privacy as taking the test at home. Some states require name-based reporting if the results are positive. Ask if your state requires name-based reporting before you take a test at your County Health Department. Otherwise, your name will forever be on a database associated with HIV/AIDS if the results are positive.

Ideally, in a perfect World, if a connection between two people or couples occurs, each person without exception should be AIDS tested before any unprotected sexual activity takes place in the future. Share the results in person, even if someone say's that they were tested. Make a blood-oath commitment to each other not to have unprotected sex with any other people.

Taking someone's word that they have been tested is your decision. In couples dating, 4 or more people involved, the risk of one person lying about being tested is very high. Much higher than 1 on 1 dating. It goes without saying that people in this lifestyle have a much higher frequency of sexual partners and more care should be exercised.

These clubs have the potential to be a rats nest of sexually transmitted diseases. You should never have sexual activity at one. If you do decide to visit one out of curiosity, go with the intent of just meeting potential partners. If you do have sex at one of these clubs you are begging for any variety of sexually transmitted diseases. 

Think about this for one second; "What if you are having group sex with several couples and a man who is wearing a condom just switched from another partner who is unknowingly HIV positive?" The bodily fluids of an infected person may well be on the outside of his condom and still be able to infect you! 

Nonoxynol-9  If you think that using a spermicide containing "Nonoxynol-9" has beneficial results in reducing the risk of the HIV virus entering your system you are dead wrong. Studies conducted have shown that "Nonoxynol-9" actually increases the risk of the HIV virus entering your body. Click Here for the results of that study. *

Except from that study: "At the end of the trial, researchers found that the women who used N-9 gel had become infected with HIV at about a 50% higher rate than women who used the placebo gel. Further, the more frequently women used only N-9 gel (without a condom) to protect themselves, the higher their risk of becoming infected. Simply stated, N-9 did not protect against HIV infection and may have caused more transmission. Women who used N-9 also had more vaginal lesions, which might have facilitated HIV transmission.?"

Not following the above information is just plain stupid. Stupidity cannot be corrected, however ignorance is easily corrected by education. If you took the time to read this page, consider yourself educated enough now to play with others safely.

The Good and the Bad. The good news is that if the HIV virus is detected early, steps can be taken to prevent it from becoming full blown AIDS if you have a great physician and expensive medication. The bad news is that it takes a lot of money to keep the HIV virus from developing into full blown AIDS. 

Magic Johnson has had HIV for many years and is still healthy. 

John and Jane Doe, from Nowhere USA that get HIV, usually develop full blown AIDS and die.  Sucks Huh? 

Moral of the story: "If you are rich you live, if you are poor you die." What else is new? If you are just an average person, with normal health insurance, you are screwed. Guard your health with a vengeance!
